Plot Summary
In the near future, Dr. Ryland Grace, a junior high school science teacher, awakens aboard the interstellar spacecraft Hail Mary with no memory of his identity or mission. As his memories gradually return, he recalls being part of a desperate mission to save Earth from an impending catastrophe. The Sun is dimming due to a mysterious microorganism called Astrophage, which absorbs stellar energy, threatening to plunge the planet into an ice age within decades. Grace's mission is to travel to the Tau Ceti system, 12 light-years away, to investigate why its star remains unaffected by Astrophage and to find a solution to save humanity.
During his journey, Grace encounters an alien spacecraft from the 40 Eridani system. He establishes communication with its sole occupant, a spider-like creature he names Rocky. Despite their vast differences, they form a cooperative partnership, sharing knowledge and resources to combat the Astrophage threat affecting both their home systems. Together, they discover a microorganism, which they name Taumoeba, capable of consuming Astrophage. They work to adapt Taumoeba to survive in their respective planetary environments, aiming to eradicate the Astrophage infestation.
After successfully breeding a strain of Taumoeba suitable for Earth's conditions, Grace faces a moral dilemma. He realizes that Rocky's ship is at risk due to the Taumoeba's unintended ability to penetrate containment materials. Choosing to prioritize his friend's safety over returning to Earth, Grace assists Rocky in resolving the issue, ultimately accompanying him to his home planet, Erid. There, Grace adapts to life among the Eridians, teaching their young and contributing to their society.
