Early Life and Education
Vitalik Buterin was born on January 31, 1994, in Kolomna, Russia, to Dmitry Buterin, a computer scientist, and Natalia Ameline, a financial analyst. At the age of six, his family emigrated to Canada in search of better employment opportunities. In Canada, Buterin was placed in a class for gifted children during his elementary school years, where he developed a strong interest in mathematics, programming, and economics. He attended The Abelard School, a private high school in Toronto, and later enrolled at the University of Waterloo. During his time at the university, he took advanced courses and served as a research assistant for cryptographer Ian Goldberg. In 2012, Buterin won a bronze medal in the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Italy. He learned about Bitcoin from his father at the age of 17 and became deeply involved in the cryptocurrency community. (en.wikipedia.org)
Bitcoin Magazine
In 2011, Buterin began writing for a publication called Bitcoin Weekly, earning five bitcoins per article. After the site shut down due to insufficient revenue, he co-founded Bitcoin Magazine in September 2011 with Mihai Alisie. Bitcoin Magazine is considered one of the first serious publications dedicated to cryptocurrencies. Buterin served as the lead writer and editor-in-chief until 2014. (en.wikipedia.org)
Ethereum
In late 2013, Buterin proposed the development of Ethereum in a white paper, envisioning a platform that would allow for more complex applications beyond Bitcoin's capabilities. He argued that Bitcoin needed a scripting language for application development, and when he failed to gain agreement, he proposed a new platform with a more general scripting language. The Ethereum white paper was circulated, and interest grew in the new protocol. Buterin announced Ethereum publicly at the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami on January 26, 2014. The platform was officially launched on July 30, 2015, with Buterin working alongside co-founders Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio, and Joseph Lubin. (en.wikipedia.org)

Buterin has been actively involved in philanthropy, donating significant amounts to various causes. In 2017, he donated $763,970 worth of Ether to the Machine Intelligence Research Institute. In 2018, he contributed $2.4 million worth of Ether to the SENS Research Foundation for research on rejuvenation biotechnologies and human life extension. In 2021, Buterin donated over $1 billion worth of cryptocurrencies to various organizations, including $1.14 billion worth of SHIBA coins to India's Crypto Covid relief fund and $336 million worth of Dogelon Mars ($ELON) to the Methuselah Foundation. Buterin's contributions to the field of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology have been widely recognized. In 2014, he was awarded the Thiel Fellowship, a $100,000 grant from venture capitalist Peter Thiel, which led him to drop out of university and work on Ethereum full-time. He received the World Technology Award in the IT Software category in 2014. In 2016, he was listed in Fortune's '40 under 40' list, and in 2018, he appeared in Forbes' '30 under 30' list. In 2021, Buterin was named in Time's 100 most influential people list. (en.wikipedia.org)
Personal Life
Buterin is known for his advocacy of decentralization and his vision for Ethereum as a platform for socio-political experiments and as a counterweight to authoritarianism. He has expressed concerns about the centralization risks and rising transaction fees associated with Ethereum. Despite his influence, the decentralized nature of Ethereum limits his direct control, so he uses his soft power to steer its future. (time.com)
Documentary
In 2024, a documentary titled 'Vitalik: An Ethereum Story' was released, exploring Buterin's early interest in programming, the creation and evolution of Ethereum, and key moments such as Ethereum’s transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake ('The Merge').
