Early Life and Education
Aravind Srinivas was born on June 7, 1994, in Chennai, India. His mother, aspiring for him to study at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), often expressed this dream during their visits to the campus. Srinivas excelled academically, earning the National Talent Search Scholarship and a merit certificate in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. He pursued dual degrees (B.Tech and M.Tech) in Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras, graduating in 2017. Despite his interest in computer science and machine learning, he was unable to switch majors due to a marginally lower GPA. Undeterred, he self-taught Python, engaged in online AI courses, and competed on Kaggle. Mentorship under Professor Balaraman Ravindran and an internship with AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio further propelled his academic journey, leading him to a PhD in computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focused on areas like computer vision, contrastive learning, and the application of transformer models for image and video generation.
Career
During his academic tenure, Srinivas held research positions at OpenAI, Google Brain, and DeepMind, focusing on machine learning and artificial intelligence. In 2022, he co-founded Perplexity AI alongside Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski. Perplexity AI introduced the world's first generally available conversational answer engine, enabling users to receive direct and reliable answers to complex queries. The company has attracted significant investment from industry leaders such as Jeff Bezos, Elad Gil, Nat Friedman, Tobi Lütke, and Yann LeCun. Under Srinivas's leadership, Perplexity AI has experienced rapid growth, serving over 20 million daily queries by December 2024 and achieving a valuation exceeding $9 billion.
Challenges and Advocacy
As an immigrant entrepreneur, Srinivas faced challenges navigating the U.S. immigration system. His prolonged wait for a green card underscored systemic issues that hinder skilled professionals from contributing fully to their adopted countries. Public figures like Elon Musk have voiced support for improving these processes, recognizing the value Srinivas and others bring to the U.S. economy. Despite these hurdles, Srinivas has prioritized building diverse and inclusive teams at Perplexity AI. His experience has fueled his advocacy for equitable immigration policies and workplace inclusion.
Recognition
In 2024, TIME magazine recognized Srinivas as one of the 100 most influential people in AI, highlighting his contributions to the field and the impact of Perplexity AI on the technology landscape.
