    Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro is a visual-arts technique that uses contrasts of light (chiaro) and dark (scuro) to model volume and create dramatic emphasis. Developed in European painting during the Renaissance and widely explored in the Baroque era, it also names specific practices such as chiaroscuro drawing on toned paper and the multi-block chiaroscuro woodcut print.
