Jews are an ethnoreligious people originating in the ancient Israelites and Hebrews of the Levant whose shared identities encompass religion, peoplehood, language, and culture. Jewish identity historically combines descent and conversion under religious law, and today Jews live in both the State of Israel and a global diaspora with diverse traditions, languages, and levels of religious observance.
